The djembe
The djembe (pronounced 'jem-beh') is one of West Africa's best-known instruments, one of the most versatile and widespread percussion instruments on the planet.
I play a custom built triple-djembe percussion kit, It has a symmetrical layout with double ‘rattle-hats’ and double Roto-tom kick pedals.

This goblet-shaped drum is traditionally carved from a single piece of African hardwood and topped with an animal skin as a drumhead.
The skin is pulled tight via rope tuning system…one of which is called the Mali-Weave.
The shape is an Helmholtz resonator. It enhance the bass note of the drum skin. Allowing the drum to produce both high and low sounds. Indeed, Bass, Tone, Slap (low middle high) and are the three main voicings used on the djembe.

Helmoltz resonance is a feature of many instruments beyond the djembe (including stringed instruments, and the mouth cavity when singing and playing didgeridoo.
