Stick Grip

There are three main types of matched drumstick grip.

German, French, and American.  See below.

The fourth grip is ‘unmatched’ and is the Traditional Grip.  Its a hangover from military side drumming and is an unnatural contortion nowadays.  Totally archaic and unnecessary…despite what some ‘experts’ say.

I teach german grip…its makes for a seamless transition from hand drumming, mallets, to drum kit and back again.  It uses full wrist and finger motion in the same plane or rotation.  Great for playing around the kit to the left and to the right of the player (best for symmetrical playing)!  Best for good body posture at the kit too!

Thomas Lang…one of the best players and educators in the world today explains matched vs trad grip.
