Seeing and Hearing the Pulse
I've been using clicks (audio only) in my headphones for recording for the last 40 years.
It works but its isolating and its very difficult to ‘groove’ with the other tracks….this is because the visual cues are missing…the other players/instruments are audio only.
The non-verbal non audio cues are as important as the audio cues in creating a groove that synchs up even when the tempo moves around…
Basically musicians need to see the the beat coming…thats what a conductor in a big band or orchestra is doing…they allow the musicians to see what's coming up.
I therefore have recently moved to using a visual metronome with a pendulum on a large display. It has become my conductor. And…rather than playing to a click I am playing with a conductor…its a whole new mindset and far less isolating. The large visual display of the metronome with pendulum really makes a difference.
I use this one on a windows PC and assign it to a separate display.
