The Bodhran

The bodhrán (pronounced Bow-Rawn) is a frame drum…used in Irish music ranging from 25 to 65 cm (10–26 in) in diameter, with most drums measuring 35–45 cm (14–18 in).

Bodhran Shell

The shell of the drum is 9–20 cm (3+1⁄2–8 in) deep. A goatskin head is tacked to one side (synthetic heads or other animal skins are sometimes used). 

The Modern Bodhran

Nowadays the Bodhran is fitted with adjustable mechanically tuned lugs. rings, and hoops.  

A Roto-Bodhran

At symmetrical drumming I have a unique rotary tuned Bodhran (amongst others) that allows rapid tuning to a tune/song's Root note. Picture attached.

Pitch. Duration. Timbre, Control

The Bodhran is one of the planets most expressive and versatile drums. The ‘under’ side is open-ended for one hand to be placed against the ‘inner’ skin of the drum  to control the pitch, duration and timbre.

Tipper

The stick is called the tipper. The double ended striking technique allows for great speed and complexity.

Frame Drum

The Bodhran is Irish, but it's a member of the Frame Drum family.  Frame drums are a global instrument.
