The History of the Modern Drum Kit: A Symmetrical Drummer's Perspective

The drum set as we know it today is only 100 years old.

The earliest surviving examples of drums date back to the 6th century B.C.

In 1918, the Chicago-based Ludwig Drum Company debuted the Jazz-Er-Up, an all-in-one set with a single-bass drum and pedal, a snare, two cymbals and a woodblock

The Modern Drum Kit: When Did It Begin?

The drum set as we know it today is barely 100 years old. While rhythm is humanity's oldest musical expression—with the earliest surviving frame and shell drums dating back to 600 B.C. (and acoustic evidence stretching millennia earlier)—the idea of a single musician controlling an entire percussion section with both hands and feet is a uniquely modern innovation.

The Dawn of "Double-Drumming" & The 1918 Milestone

Prior to the late 19th century, playing drums in theatre pits or marching brass bands required multiple players: one for the snare, one for the bass drum, and another for cymbals. To save space and payroll, early pioneers began "double-drumming," manually striking the bass drum with a stick while playing the snare.

The true revolution occurred when William F. Ludwig patented the first functional bass drum pedal in 1909. That breakthrough culminated in 1918, when the Chicago-based Ludwig Drum Company cataloged and debuted the "Jazz-Er-Up". This all-in-one outfit featured:

  • A single-tension 8"24" bass drum with a foot pedal
  • A single-tension 3"12" snare drum
  • Integrated trap accessories including two cymbals, a woodblock, a cowbell, and a triangle

For the first time, a single drummer could drive an entire ensemble, birthing the foundational instrument of popular modern music.

Stewart Copeland & The 100-Year Rhythm Legacy

In his acclaimed BBC documentary On Drums... Stewart Copeland!, Stewart Copeland—legendary powerhouse behind The Police (alongside Sting and Andy Summers)—explores the drum kit as the driving motor of modern music evolution.

Copeland traces how fundamental polyrhythms traveled from West Africa across the Atlantic to New Orleans. Through syncopation, ragtime, and early jazz, these African-derived beats fused with European military percussion techniques, creating the backbeat that underpins almost all modern popular genres.

Throughout the documentary, Copeland shares key insights into technique, dynamics, and groove alongside an extraordinary lineup of drum icons from the past half-century:

  • John Densmore (The Doors) — Master of jazz-infused rock dynamics and subtle space.
  • Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers) — Powerhouse of funk-rock groove and pocket.
  • Sheila E. (Prince, Solo) — Icon of Latin-infused percussion, polyrhythmic flair, and showmanship.
  • Stephen Morris (New Order / Joy Division) — Bridge between organic acoustic drumming and post-punk electronic rhythms.
  • Taylor Hawkins (Foo Fighters) — The embodiment of high-energy, classic stadium rock drive.

From building his own bass drum pedal to exploring the street rhythms of New Orleans and jamming on Santa Monica beach, Copeland presents the history of drum kits with undeniable charisma, passion, and authority.

I urge you to watch Stewart charismatically present the history of drumkits on the BBC.
