Drums and percussion comprise a large range of tones, sounds, frequencies, and envelopes…all combined into one instrument (the kit).
All these sounds and surfaces react to your sticks hands mallets etc slightly differently.
Some are more efficient at producing sound than others…some sounds suit human hearing range easier than others and are more audible in a mix than others.
Playing such a range of sounds musically and ‘simultaneously’ requires self mixing…adjusting the volume and strike position of each stroke to match the overall volume, groove, and tone of your entire kit (percussion or drum).
Excellent groove is a product of rhythmic precision and dynamic interplay between the sounds and notes that are being played.
Listening to the ‘mix’ of you playing to create a musical sonic and rhythmic ‘fabric’ is an essential yet difficult skill.
Recording your practice and gigs provides an objective reference from which to add finesse to your self mixing and increase the musicality of your playing.
